The Role

At Notpla, we are on a mission to make packaging disappear. We are an innovative, ideas- and action-oriented start up that was founded on the belief that nature knows best. We develop and manufacture naturally biodegradable packaging solutions, made from seaweed and plants. We are currently looking to bring in a Grants Manager to lead the business through the identification and full grants writing and award process.

Our business services team is a cross functional group that performs a number of roles within the business, at its core it encompasses grants, finance, HR & impact. Sitting within our impact team you will be joining a highly passionate but small group of individuals who are responsible for carrying out all of the Grant and impact work within the business. The Impact & Grants team are at the heart of everything we do at Notpla from identifying suitable grants and awards to working with the research and development groups to create and deliver proposals. Grants enable Notpla to extend its runway and undertake more ambitious, more creative R&D work that otherwise would not be funded by Venture Capital investors, and in this way support us in truly being the most innovative sustainable packaging start-up. 

Your profile

The Grants Manager will be responsible for the full grants writing process. You will be given the opportunity to truly lead your area, as well as taking grants through from identification to proposal you will also be responsible for evaluating and redefining our internal grant writing and application processes. We are looking for an experienced grants manager who possesses excellent presentation skills as well as strong communication in written, visual and verbal platforms. In order to succeed in this role, you will need to be detail oriented with experience in strategic planning and a good overall market knowledge. As well as the above, other day to day responsibilities: 

  • Identify suitable grants and awards and maintain an updated pipeline of upcoming applications and deadlines (mainly InnovateUK, EU grants and private awards).

  • Prepare proposals by determining concept, gathering and formatting information, writing drafts, and obtaining approvals.

  • Utilise our project management system to ensure on time delivery of grant projects.

  • Work alongside the technical and commercial teams, project managing the grant process from start to finish.

  • Develop expertise in sustainability, bio-materials and across a wide range of areas within the bluetech and greentech spaces. 

  • Build a best practice around grant project management. 

  • Determine proposal concept by identifying and clarifying opportunities and needs, studying requests for proposals, and attending strategy meetings.

  • Attending events, creating and nurturing an external network of relevant contacts. 

  • Meet proposal deadlines by establishing priorities and target dates for information gathering, writing, review, approval, and submission.

  • Coordinate with relevant technical team members for proposals and grant reviews.

  • Prepare and help to write risk registers and financial forecasts in collaboration with technical teams.

  • Write, revise, and edit drafts including executive summaries, conclusions, and organisation credentials.

  • Edit layout & design of the proposals to match brand guidelines.

  • Maintain quality results by using templates; following proposal-writing standards including readability, consistency, and tone; maintaining past proposal archives.

  • Obtain approvals by reviewing proposals with key providers and project managers.

  • Improve proposal-writing results by evaluating and re-designing processes, approach, coordination, and boilerplate.

  • Support company by jumping on new and different requests, and exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.

  • Support technical team on grant management for awarded projects.

We received multiple awards and grants from Innovate UK and the Ellen Macarthur Foundation for our innovative product “Ooho” – an edible and fully biodegradable sachet. Our portfolio has now extended with multiple innovation solutions.
